Southern Tanzania Luxury Camps

Selous Safari Company operates luxury tented camps in Southern Tanzania that are the equivalent of the best camps and lodges anywhere in Africa.  These camps offer superb gameviewing in beutiful natural settings in intimate contact with nature.  These camps are excellent value, offering the kind of remoteness, isolation and exclusivity that you expect from the top camps in Botswana, but at a fraction of the cost.

Guiding and gameviewing are superb, and the camps are quite accessible by regularly scheduled aircraft transfers.

They are easily combined with a more traditional Northern Tanzania circuit in Serengeti and Ngorongoro crater.

While itineraries are quite flexible we have prepared a sample 11-day Southern Circuit Itinerary.

Selous Safari Camp

A luxury camp spread along the banks of Lake Nzerakera [map of the Selous Game Reserve] designed to blend in with the spectacular natural scenery in what is one of the most photogenic areas of the Selous Game Reserve. Each of the 9 tents tent sits atop its own raised timber platform, affording guests an unmatched experience of the African bush. Each tent has en suite bathrooms and open air hot-water showers.

The camp has the prime position at the centre of the unique riverine and lake complex, with the highest concentration of African wildlife and myriad birdlife. There are no fences and no artificial modifications to the natural fauna and so animals wander freely through the camp.  Our chefs prepare the finest cuisine from using African influences and local fresh fruit, vegetables & spices.

Activities Game drives in open-sided 4-wheel drive vehicles, River safaris in boats with outboard motors Walking safaris. Fishing. Mobile bush camping (fly camping) in pristine surroundings (pre-booking essential).

Selous Private Camp

Only a short remove from Selous Safari Camp, what makes Selous Private Camp different from anywhere else in Selous, or indeed East Africa, is its' size.Consisting of just four large tented suites, Selous Private is the smallest Luxury Safari Camp in Tanzania, dedicated to providing an unparalleled level of service, hospitality and luxury for a small, select number of guests.

The opulent tented suites are hexagonal shaped to catch the lake breeze, leaving the tent well-ventilated whilst still maintaining maximum privacy. The tents are set on the banks of Lake Nzerakera, with definitive views of the wildlife and the dramatic Selous sunsets.

The adjacent dual-vanity bathrooms feature tasteful antique fittings.

With its' own swimming pool, dining area, vehicles, boats, guides, managers and gourmet bush cuisine, Selous Private offers the very best in time-honoured safari style to the privileged few that stay there.

Jongomero Camp

Jongomero Camp is set along the banks of the seasonal Jongomero river, in Ruaha National Park. Accommodation is in 8 extravagantly spacious tents on raised platforms under a makuti thatch roof and includes 8 Ft wide Dhow wood Emperor beds, en suite bathrooms with double vanity, and hot and cold running water (solar heated with backup immersion heater). A spacious front veranda ensures privacy with views over the riverbed.

The lounge & dining area is beautifully located in the deep shade of an ancient African Ebony tree with uninterrupted views of the Jongomero River bed.  Dining is a combination of table d’hote, elegant buffets, al fresco dinners under the stars, campfire cooking and classic safari picnics. Cooking style is international with East African flavours. A filtered swimming pool overlooks the seasonal Jongomero River.

Activities Game drives in open 4-wheel drive vehicles. All day drives with bush picnics.

Ras Kutani

Ras Kutani, 35 kilometres south of Dar es Salaam, offers long stretches of pristine deserted beaches, warm blue seas and an opportunity to experience the peace and tranquillity.  The hotel is flanked by a fresh water lagoon abutting onto a coastal forest, which spills to the edge of the unspoilt and undeveloped beach. Accommodation is in twelve spacious, charming cottages constructed of natural, local materials that harmonise perfectly with the wonderful surroundings. Ethnic furnishings impart a sense of the Tanzanian coast's rich cultural heritage. Each cottage has its own en suite bathroom and large veranda with views of the azure ocean.

Additionally, four "Upepo" suites are set up on the hill with sweeping views of the crescent bay and the jade waters of the Indian Ocean. Set apart from the main lodge, perched amidst tropical forest on the hill behind, each suite comes with its own private areas and signature Sultan's bed.

The chefs pride themselves on preparing the fresh “fruit of the ocean” fare from the readily available local fish and crustaceans.
